ICPC to Arraign El-Rufai Over Alleged Fraud

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai

Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, has announced plans to arraign former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over multiple allegations including fraud, abuse of office, and money laundering.

In a statement issued on Monday, the commission confirmed that El-Rufai will be arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga at the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on March 24, 2026. The case, filed under suit number FHC/KD/73/2026, involves charges ranging from “conversion of and possession of public property, to money laundering.”

The ICPC further disclosed that a separate charge has also been filed against the former governor at the Kaduna State High Court. In this second case, El-Rufai is listed alongside one Amadu Sule, with the charges covering “abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud to conferring undue advantage, among others.”

According to the commission, both cases were instituted on March 18, 2026, signaling a coordinated legal move across federal and state jurisdictions. While the Federal High Court arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, the date for proceedings at the State High Court “will be communicated at the appropriate time as determined by the Court.”

The ICPC confirmed that the former governor has been formally notified of the charges, stating that “Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i has been duly served.” The agency also reiterated its commitment to due process, noting that it “restates its commitment to adhering fully to due process and the rule of law at all times.”

The development marks a significant escalation in legal scrutiny surrounding the former governor, who served Kaduna State for two terms. As of press time, there has been no public response from El-Rufai or his representatives regarding the charges.

Former Accountant-General Nwabuoku Jailed 72 Years Over ₦868m Fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years imprisonment for his role in a ₦868.46 million money laundering scheme.

Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho found that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, convicting Nwabuoku on all nine counts brought against him. The court sentenced him to eight years imprisonment on each count, amounting to 72 years, although the terms are to run concurrently.

The judge affirmed the prosecution’s argument that the former top government official engaged in large-scale financial misconduct.

The court described Nwabuoku’s actions—particularly the diversion of funds meant for national security and defence during his tenure at the Ministry of Defence—as “appalling,” underscoring the gravity of the offence.

According to the EFCC, Nwabuoku was prosecuted for laundering public funds through multiple companies between 2019 and 2021 while serving as Director of Finance and Accounts at the ministry. The anti-graft agency stated that it successfully established the financial trail and secured testimony from several witnesses during the trial.

The court also noted evidence that the defendant had refunded over ₦200 million during the investigation, a claim that was not challenged by the defence.

Nwabuoku, who briefly served as acting Accountant-General in 2022, was initially arraigned on January 15, 2025, on a nine-count amended charge of money laundering and had been granted bail of ₦500 million pending the conclusion of the trial.

One Dead, Two Injured as Gas Tanker Explosion Rocks Sangotedo, Shops Razed in Lagos Inferno

A gas tanker explosion at Sangotedo in Lagos has left one person dead and two others injured, after a collision triggered a massive fire that engulfed nearby structures and caused widespread panic.

The incident occurred at Ologuro Bus Stop, opposite a filling station in the Sangotedo area, when a tipper truck rammed into a gas-laden tanker from behind, igniting an explosion that quickly escalated into a raging inferno. Emergency responders say the impact and subsequent fire claimed the life of the truck driver at the scene.

Confirming the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said preliminary findings point to reckless driving as the immediate cause of the crash. He stated that “preliminary investigations indicate the tipper truck driver’s over speeding and reckless driving were the immediate causes.”

Oke-Osanyintolu added that the deceased, an adult male, died on impact, while two adult female victims sustained minor injuries and were promptly treated at the scene by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

The explosion also caused significant property damage, with at least four roadside shops consumed by the fire. Authorities noted that the contents of the tanker remain trapped, complicating ongoing recovery operations at the site.

Emergency response teams, including LASEMA’s Shark Unit and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, were deployed swiftly to contain the blaze. Their intervention successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, averting what officials described as a potentially more devastating incident.

As of the latest update, the fire has been brought under control, while recovery and safety operations continue in the area. Authorities have cordoned off the scene as investigations proceed and efforts are made to safely manage the remaining tanker contents.

Welbeck Double Sinks Liverpool as Slot Laments Injuries, Missed Chances at Brighton

Liverpool FC suffered another setback in their Premier League campaign after a brace from Danny Welbeck secured a deserved victory for Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Welbeck struck in either half to hand the hosts all three points, with Milos Kerkez briefly restoring parity for Liverpool with a composed equaliser. However, Brighton’s dominance after the break ultimately proved decisive, as the Seagulls outperformed their visitors in the second half to seal the win.

Speaking after the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot pointed to a combination of injuries, fatigue, and recurring defensive lapses as key factors behind the defeat. “What went wrong started off with the lead-up to this game,” Slot said, highlighting the disruption caused by missing key players. “We had Mo Salah injured and we have Alisson injured. After two minutes Hugo Ekitike [is] out, so that has happened so many times to us this season.”

Slot acknowledged Brighton’s superiority after the interval, conceding that the hosts deserved their victory. “In the first half I think it was an equal game but in the second half Brighton were the better team on the pitch and they deserved to win,” he said.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot

The Dutch manager confirmed that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will remain sidelined through the international break, while striker Hugo Ekitike’s early exit was due to a knock that may not keep him out for long. “Alisson will definitely be out during the international break and let’s see afterwards. Hugo, I think he could play tomorrow if he needed to. It was a dead leg,” Slot explained.

Liverpool’s attacking struggles were compounded by the absence of key forwards, a situation Slot admitted has repeatedly forced tactical compromises. “You have to continue without one of the best strikers that the league has seen… Alexander Isak… one of the best goalscorers… Mo Salah… and then missing out on Hugo Ekitike,” he said, underlining the scale of the challenge facing his side.

Despite a competitive first-half display, Slot conceded that his team faded as Brighton grew stronger, with the hosts coming closer to extending their lead than Liverpool were to finding an equaliser. He also resisted the temptation to attribute the loss solely to a lack of creativity, instead crediting Brighton’s performance. “They were the better team and created more chances than us… Give credit to them. They were good,” he said, singling out Kaoru Mitoma for his impact off the bench.

The defeat marks Liverpool’s 10th league loss of the season—their highest tally since the 2015–16 campaign—highlighting a challenging campaign despite flashes of strong form. Slot acknowledged the significance of that statistic, noting, “It says how and what great teams Liverpool has had in the last 10 years… But still it’s not good enough.”

Reflecting on the broader picture, the Liverpool boss pointed to a combination of late goals conceded, squad limitations, and injury setbacks as contributing factors to their inconsistent results. “No matter how many excuses I can come up with, it’s still not good enough, the position we’re in right now,” he admitted.

With the international break offering little respite for a squad already stretched by heavy minutes, Slot maintained that his players showed resilience despite fatigue. “They didn’t give up and that’s an important asset to have for the last period of the season,” he said.

Nigeria Debunks ‘Deportation Deal’ Claims, Clarifies UK Migration Pact Terms

Nigeria's Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo at the signing of the agreement in the UK on Thursday.

The Federal Government has moved to quell growing public concern and misinformation surrounding the migration partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, insisting that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) does not compel Nigeria to accept non-citizens deported from Britain.

The clarification follows widespread speculation after the agreement was signed on the sidelines of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the UK. Authorities said the deal is strictly aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration management, particularly in curbing irregular migration and ensuring orderly, lawful movement between both countries.

According to the government, the MoU—signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior and the UK’s Home Secretary—establishes a structured framework for “regulated and safe migration flow” while enhancing collaboration on immigration enforcement in line with domestic laws and international conventions.

Officials were emphatic that “nowhere in the 12-page memorandum is Nigeria required to accept foreign nationals other than Nigerians,” stressing that any individual to be repatriated must undergo rigorous identification and verification processes to confirm nationality.

The agreement provides that both countries will facilitate the “dignified return” of their citizens who do not have legal rights to remain in the other’s territory. Authorities noted that the rights of returnees are protected under the deal, which mandates that individuals must be treated “with dignity and respect, with due regard to their human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

Under the operational procedures outlined in the MoU, deportations will only occur after thorough checks, including biometric verification or supporting documentation such as passports or national identity records. Where identity cannot be conclusively established, removals are to be deferred. In cases of wrongful repatriation, the requesting country is obligated to return the individual at its own cost.

The government also highlighted provisions designed to protect the welfare and assets of returnees, noting that migrants will be allowed to travel with their legally acquired belongings. “Every returnee will be given ample opportunity to make adequate arrangements for the transfer or disposal of his property,” the MoU states, underscoring a departure from previous practices where deportees often lost access to their assets.

Additionally, individuals facing deportation retain the right to appeal based on human rights considerations, including long-term residence, cultural integration, or potential reintegration challenges in their home country.

Nigeria further retained sovereign control over its immigration documentation process. The MoU makes clear that the Nigeria Immigration Service alone is responsible for issuing travel documents for returning nationals, even in cases involving expedited procedures using UK-issued letters.

Beyond repatriation, the agreement includes reintegration support mechanisms for returnees, ranging from immediate assistance such as accommodation and transportation to longer-term initiatives like access to education, vocational training, and entrepreneurship funding.

The MoU, which mirrors similar agreements signed in 2012, 2017 and 2022, will run for an initial five-year period, subject to renewal upon mutual consent.

Reiterating its position, the government urged media organisations and the public to seek accurate information before drawing conclusions. “Media organisations should seek clarification when uncertain about any issue to avoid misinforming the public,” the statement said.

IAEA Raises Alarm After Strike on Iran’s Natanz Nuclear Site

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran reported an attack on its key nuclear facility in Natanz, triggering fresh international concern over the risks of escalation and potential nuclear safety hazards.

In a statement, the UN nuclear watchdog said, “The IAEA has been informed by Iran that the Natanz nuclear site was attacked today. No increase in off-site radiation levels reported,” adding that it is actively assessing the situation.

The announcement comes amid intensifying military tensions in the Middle East, with multiple reports indicating that the Natanz enrichment facility—central to Iran’s nuclear programme—was targeted in recent strikes. Initial assessments from Iranian authorities and international monitors suggest that, despite the attack, there has been no radioactive leakage and no immediate danger to surrounding communities.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi issued a renewed warning over the risks posed by military actions involving nuclear infrastructure, stressing the need for de-escalation. He reiterated his call for restraint “to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident,” as concerns mount over the safety of nuclear facilities in active conflict zones.

The Natanz site has been repeatedly targeted in recent months as hostilities involving Iran and its adversaries have escalated, raising fears of a broader regional conflict and the possibility of unintended nuclear consequences.

Global attention is now focused on the evolving situation, with nuclear experts warning that even without immediate radiation leaks, sustained attacks on sensitive facilities could compromise safety systems and increase long-term risks.

The IAEA said it remains in close contact with Iranian authorities and will continue to monitor developments closely as investigations into the latest incident proceed.

Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two suspected gunrunners and recovered 444 rounds of live ammunition during a routine security operation in Taraba State.

The arrests were made on Thursday along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road in Wukari Local Government Area, where soldiers deployed at the Forward Operating Base conducted a stop-and-search exercise. According to military authorities, the suspects were intercepted while riding a motorcycle and subsequently taken into custody after a search uncovered a significant cache of ammunition.

The suspects were identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, and Elisha Danladi, 38, a native of Wukari in Taraba State. Security operatives recovered 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition from them, alongside ₦29,200 in cash, two mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, personal belongings, and the motorcycle allegedly used for transportation.

Military officials confirmed that the suspects and the recovered items remain in custody as investigations continue to determine the source of the ammunition and its intended destination. The development underscores ongoing efforts by security forces to disrupt the movement of illegal arms in Nigeria’s North-Central and North-East corridors.

The Commander of the 6 Brigade, Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and swift action, describing the operation as consistent with directives from the Chief of Army Staff to clamp down on criminal networks and restore stability in the region. He urged personnel to “sustain the momentum and remain resolute in their efforts to rid the area of all forms of criminality.”

Akaliro also reassured residents of the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while calling on the public to support ongoing operations. He encouraged citizens to provide “timely and credible information on suspicious activities” to aid security agencies in their work.

Reinforcing internal accountability, the commander reiterated his commitment to maintaining a robust system of rewards and discipline within the ranks, noting that officers and soldiers who demonstrate professionalism, dedication, and courage during operations “will be duly recognized and rewarded.”

Nigeria, UK Seal £746m Deal to Transform Lagos Ports, Drive Trade

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday.

A £746 million export finance agreement to modernise Nigeria’s busiest seaports took centre stage as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral economic ties.

The deal, announced Thursday, will fund the redevelopment of the Lagos Port Complex and the Tin Can Island Port Complex—two critical gateways for Nigeria’s international trade. Backed by UK Export Finance, the facility guarantees the investment, with Citibank coordinating and arranging the loan.

According to BBC News, the agreement is expected to unlock £236 million in supplier contracts for British companies, underscoring the commercial upside for the UK. Among the headline beneficiaries is British Steel, which is set to secure a £70 million contract—a development the British government has described as a major boost to its industrial base.

The port modernisation project is designed to address long-standing inefficiencies at Nigeria’s primary maritime hubs in Lagos, improving cargo handling capacity, reducing turnaround times, and easing congestion that has historically constrained trade flows. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s logistics performance and competitiveness within West Africa’s trade corridors.

During the talks, Tinubu emphasised Nigeria’s economic reform agenda and the importance of strategic international partnerships in delivering infrastructure at scale. He noted that the country remains “challenged by terrorism,” highlighting the dual priorities of security stabilisation and economic growth.

For the UK, the agreement aligns with efforts to expand export-led growth and support domestic industries through overseas projects. The structure of the deal—anchored on export credit guarantees—ensures that British firms play a central role in execution while strengthening long-term trade relations with Africa’s largest economy.

The meeting in London forms part of a broader diplomatic engagement aimed at reinforcing UK-Nigeria cooperation across infrastructure, trade, and investment. With implementation expected to begin following final contractual processes, both governments are positioning the £746 million deal as a cornerstone of a renewed economic partnership with tangible benefits on both sides.
