Ondo Police Track Stolen Lagos Car to Akure, Arrest Two Suspects

The Ondo State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in crime-fighting operations, recovering a suspected stolen vehicle and arresting two suspects following a coordinated, intelligence-led operation in Akure.

According to the Command, the operation was triggered on April 30, 2026, after receiving credible intelligence that a silver Hyundai vehicle, earlier reported stolen in Lagos, was being transported towards Abuja by suspected criminal elements. Acting swiftly, operatives—particularly from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit—activated a coordinated response using surveillance tools and real-time intelligence sharing to track the vehicle’s movement.

Police said the vehicle was successfully intercepted along its route after being closely monitored through technology-driven policing methods. However, the situation escalated when the principal suspect, identified as ThankGod Unchena, 25, allegedly attempted to evade arrest by jumping into the Ogbese River.

Demonstrating what the Command described as professionalism and tactical efficiency, operatives pursued the suspect into the river and apprehended him. A second suspect, Adewole Muyedeen, 53, was also arrested after investigators discovered he had taken control of the vehicle during the journey in what police believe was an attempt to avoid detection at security checkpoints.

Both suspects are currently in custody, while the recovered vehicle has been secured as evidence. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects may be linked to a wider criminal network, with authorities intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend other accomplices.

The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, said the operation highlights the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in the state, noting that technology and timely information from the public remain critical in tackling crime.

He also commended the operatives involved for their gallantry and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property. The police chief further expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for providing strategic direction and support that have strengthened operational capacity nationwide.
