The race for a place at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 has reached a critical stage, with the final round of African qualifiers set to deliver high-stakes clashes across the continent.
Fixtures confirmed for the fourth and decisive round will see Nigeria’s U20 women’s team take on Malawi, while other matchups include Côte d’Ivoire against Benin and Ghana facing Uganda. The ties, scheduled on a home-and-away basis, will be played between May 1–3 for the first leg and May 8–10 for the return fixtures, with the aggregate winners securing qualification for the global tournament.
Nigeria’s Falconets, one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, head into the final round buoyed by strong performances in earlier stages of the qualifiers. The team booked their place in this decisive phase after overcoming Senegal 3–1 on aggregate, following an earlier dominant display against Rwanda.
Head coach Moses Aduku expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness ahead of the double-header against Malawi, stressing the team’s focus and determination. “We have a full squad on ground and everyone is focused on the task at hand. From now, we will concentrate on team planning and tactical work. We are taking this very seriously, and I believe by the end of the match we will come out victorious,” he said.
He also rallied support for the team, adding, “We urge Nigerians to continue supporting us as they did against Rwanda and Senegal. We are confident that, after both legs against Malawi, Nigeria will secure qualification.”
Across the continent, the final round promises intense competition as only four teams will emerge from the African qualifiers to represent the region at the tournament in Poland. The stakes are particularly high given the growing competitiveness of women’s football in Africa, with emerging nations pushing traditional powerhouses in recent years.
The tournament itself, scheduled for September 2026 in Poland, will feature 24 teams from across the globe, offering a platform for the next generation of stars in women’s football.
