Fresh concerns over Nigeria’s electoral integrity and security situation have emerged in Washington, as members of the United States House of Representatives Republican caucus signal closer scrutiny of developments in Africa’s largest democracy.
The concerns were highlighted in a statement shared by Von Batten-Montague-York on their X.com account, saying lawmakers had directed that they be kept “actively informed regarding election integrity concerns, as well as allegations that certain senior officials within the current Nigerian government may be complicit in violence and targeted attacks against #Christian communities in Northern Nigeria.”
While acknowledging Nigeria’s sovereignty, the statement suggested that key figures in the US political establishment are increasingly uneasy about reports of insecurity and governance challenges. It noted that Donald Trump and congressional Republicans “have made clear that they will not remain passive in the face of widespread reports of violence against Christian populations,” adding that concerns also extend to whether authorities are doing enough to protect citizens and uphold democratic processes.

The development comes amid unverified claims circulating on social media, including a video allegedly showing Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, making remarks interpreted by some as encouraging disruption of opposition political activities. The video’s authenticity and full context have not been independently confirmed.
According to the statement, the alleged incident has raised questions about possible interference in opposition party affairs, particularly involving the African Democratic Congress. It also referenced the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting claims that such disruptions could be cited in decisions affecting party leadership structures.
Additional allegations mentioned include claims regarding Gbajabiamila’s citizenship status and whether any statements attributed to him could have broader international implications, though no official confirmation has been provided on these issues.
