Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council following the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, a major urban transport initiative aimed at easing mobility challenges in the state.

In a statement shared on his official channel, Sanwo-Olu described the approval as a significant step forward in Lagos’ long-term infrastructure development plan. “On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for the approval of Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project,” he said.

The proposed rail line is expected to span approximately 68 kilometres, connecting Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations planned across key commercial and residential hubs, including Victoria Island, Ajah, and the broader Lekki corridor. According to the governor, the system is designed to accommodate up to 500,000 passengers daily at inception, with the capacity to scale to nearly one million commuters over time.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the operational efficiency of the project, noting its potential to significantly decongest Lagos roads. “With the ability to move up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, the line will reduce travel time and relieve pressure on our road network,” he stated.

The governor further emphasised that the Green Line aligns with the state government’s broader objectives of improving urban mobility, driving economic growth, and enhancing living standards. “This project reflects our commitment to improving mobility, supporting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for Lagosians. We value the continued support of the Federal Government and remain focused on delivering a system that meets the needs of our people,” he added.

The Green Line is part of Lagos’ expanding rail infrastructure strategy, complementing existing and ongoing projects aimed at transforming public transportation in Africa’s most populous city.
