The newly elected executives of the Ogun-West Independent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have assumed office following their inauguration at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Comrade Egbewunmi Olatunji emerged as Chairman of the chapel, with Comrade Fashina Olugbenga elected General Secretary and Comrade Sunday Adeyemi as Treasurer. The executives received their certificates of return during the Ogun State NUJ Council congress held on Thursday, and chaired by the council chairman, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju.
The inauguration marked the commencement of a new administration for the Ogun-West Independent Chapel, with members expressing optimism that the leadership would strengthen the chapel’s unity, visibility and professional relevance while building on the work of previous administrations.
The ceremony brought together NUJ leaders, journalists and members of the chapel, reflecting the growing role of the Ogun-West Independent Chapel as a platform for journalists working across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Ogun State NUJ Council Chairman, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, congratulated the newly elected executives and commended members of the chapel for conducting a peaceful and rancour-free election.
Olanrewaju urged the new leadership to sustain the spirit of unity demonstrated during the electoral process and remain committed to the ideals and responsibilities of journalism. He also charged the Egbewunmi-led executive to promote unity among members, uphold the dignity of the profession and contribute to the development of both the chapel and the wider Ogun State NUJ Council.
The new administration is expected to place emphasis on professional development, stronger collaboration among members and improved welfare, while also providing more effective representation for journalists within the chapel and the wider NUJ structure.
For Olatunji and his team, the inauguration represents the beginning of a fresh leadership phase, with expectations of purposeful administration and greater engagement with members on issues affecting their professional interests.
The event also featured preparations for the forthcoming Ogun State Press Week, as members of the Press Week Planning Committee presented details of activities lined up for the annual celebration. Journalists and NUJ chapels across the state were encouraged to participate actively in the programme.
