Bosnia and Herzegovina boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a convincing 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match, moving onto four points and strengthening their position among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The European side delivered a composed performance to end Qatar’s campaign, condemning the Gulf nation to another group-stage exit after also failing to progress at the 2022 World Cup on home soil.
Bosnia started brightly and immediately put Qatar under pressure at BC Place. Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was called into action twice within the opening four minutes, first denying Ermedin Demirovic’s powerful effort before producing another save to keep out Ivan Sunjic.
The breakthrough eventually arrived through Bosnia’s teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegovic. The 18-year-old, already the youngest Bosnian player to feature at a World Cup, produced a moment of brilliance midway through the first half, beating two defenders before unleashing a stunning long-range strike that left Abunada with no chance.
The wonder goal sparked jubilant celebrations among Bosnia’s players as Alajbegovic soaked in the moment after opening the scoring on one of the biggest stages in world football.
Bosnia doubled their advantage just five minutes later, with veteran captain Edin Dzeko playing a key role. The 40-year-old forward, making his 150th international appearance, saw his effort take a significant deflection off a defender and then goalkeeper Abunada before crossing the line for an own goal.
Dzeko nearly added his name to the scoresheet moments later when he raced clear of the Qatari defence, but his effort struck the post after beating the goalkeeper.
Despite Bosnia’s dominance, Qatar responded before halftime through their most experienced player. Hassan Al-Haydos, the 35-year-old captain and the nation’s most-capped footballer, reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute after Bosnia failed to clear their lines effectively.
Qatar nearly drew level in first-half stoppage time when Pedro Miguel’s effort struck the far post, allowing Bosnia to preserve their narrow lead heading into the break.
The second half saw fewer clear-cut opportunities, but the contest took an emotional turn when Al-Haydos was forced off injured in the 55th minute. The veteran midfielder left the field visibly distressed, potentially bringing an end to both his World Cup campaign and his distinguished international career.
Bosnia eventually secured the victory in the 80th minute through Ermin Mahmic. The forward continued his fine scoring form by finding the net for the second consecutive match, prodding home from close range to restore his side’s two-goal cushion and effectively end Qatar’s resistance.
Mahmic celebrated passionately by removing his shirt, earning a booking but caring little as Bosnia moved closer to a place in the last 32.
The result leaves Bosnia on four points and in a strong position to qualify as one of the eight best third-placed teams when the group stage concludes. Their fate will now depend on results elsewhere across the tournament.
