Nigeria’s Super Eagles retained the Unity Cup title on Saturday, May 30, 2026, after delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz in the final at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic in London.
Alhassan Yusuf opened the scoring early in the third minute, reacting sharply to a rebound after Jamaica goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke or Teddy Sharman-Lowe parried an initial effort from a long throw-in. The Leicester City midfielder’s brace was completed in stoppage time (91st minute), while Nice forward Terem Moffi headed home the second goal in the 59th minute from a pinpoint cross by Femi Azeez.
The win marks Nigeria’s fourth Unity Cup triumph since the tournament’s inception, confirming their supremacy as back-to-back champions. They had defeated Jamaica on penalties in the 2025 final after a 2-2 draw. Nigeria advanced to this year’s decider with a 2-0 semi-final win over Zimbabwe, while Jamaica overcame India 2-0.
Coach Eric Chelle fielded an experimental squad featuring fringe and emerging players, who controlled the match after weathering Jamaica’s early pressure. The Super Eagles maintained discipline in midfield and defense, limiting the Reggae Boyz to few clear chances despite Jamaica’s spells of possession. A late penalty appeal by Jamaica following a collision involving Arthur Okonkwo and Kaheim Dixon was waved away.
The victory comes as a significant morale booster for Nigeria ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Unity Cup is recognized as a FIFA Tier 1 event, awarding full international caps.
Prior to the final, Chelle emphasized his team’s winning mentality. “Penalties are part of the game, and it can decide who wins a match. Every time I go into a game, I have the mentality to win,” he said. “This is the culture I have put in these boys – the winning culture. … These are very young players with a bright future, and they are hungry for success at any level. So, on Saturday, we will see how the game is decided, but we surely have prepared to win and defend the Unity Cup.”
