NAFDAC Busts Fake Alcohol Syndicates in Lagos, Seizes ₦350m Worth of Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has dismantled two illegal alcohol production syndicates in Lagos, seizing counterfeit and adulterated products valued at about ₦350 million in a major enforcement operation targeting public health threats.

The agency disclosed that the raids were carried out following credible intelligence, leading enforcement operatives to storm locations at Zamfara Plaza in the Trade Fair Complex and parts of Lagos Island. During the operation, more than 1,800 cartons of fake alcoholic beverages were recovered, alongside equipment and materials used in the illicit production process.

The crackdown forms part of intensified efforts by NAFDAC to curb the proliferation of counterfeit and unsafe consumables in Nigeria, particularly within the alcoholic drinks market, which has been repeatedly flagged as vulnerable to adulteration and illegal refilling operations.

Although no official statement quoting senior officials was immediately released in the latest operation, the agency has consistently warned that such illegal practices pose serious health risks to consumers, including exposure to toxic substances and unregulated ingredients.

NAFDAC, established to regulate and control the manufacture, distribution, and sale of food, drugs, and beverages, has in recent years stepped up enforcement actions against fake and substandard products nationwide. Its operations have included raids on illegal factories, seizures of counterfeit goods, and stricter monitoring of supply chains.

The latest seizure comes amid broader regulatory measures in the alcohol sector, including the ongoing enforcement of a nationwide ban on sachet alcohol and small-volume packaging, aimed at reducing abuse and protecting public health.
