Jimoh Ibrahim Assumes Duty as Nigeria’s UN Representative

Nigerian businessman, politician and senator Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, has officially taken up his post as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, marking a fresh chapter in the country’s diplomatic engagement at the global body.

Ibrahim presented his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Secretariat headquarters in New York on Monday. The ceremony formally accredited him as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative, completing the process of his recent appointment by the Federal Government.

In a statement issued shortly after the presentation, Ibrahim expressed the significance of the moment for Nigeria’s international standing. “I had the honour of presenting my Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of the @UN in New York, USA, officially assuming my role as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations,” he wrote. “This marks Nigeria’s renewed voice, commitment, and presence in global diplomacy.”

The development comes as Nigeria seeks to amplify its influence on key multilateral issues including sustainable development, peace and security, climate action, and global economic governance. Ibrahim’s assumption of office is widely viewed as a strategic move to bolster the country’s representation at the world’s foremost diplomatic forum.
