The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, has moved to defuse tensions as he personally addressed a group of protesting retired police officers who gathered at the Governor’s Office to demand their exit from the contributory pension scheme.

The peaceful protest, held on Monday, prompted swift engagement by the Nigeria Police Force in the state, with Lawal leading efforts to maintain order while acknowledging the grievances of the retirees. The officers had assembled to press for improved welfare and changes to their pension arrangements, an issue that has generated growing concern among retired personnel nationwide.

Addressing the demonstrators, Lawal assured them that their concerns were being taken seriously at the highest levels of the police hierarchy. He stated that their welfare “remains a matter of importance to the Inspector-General of Police,” referencing Olatunji Rilwan Disu. He also commended the retirees for their orderly conduct, noting that they had expressed their grievances peacefully and within the bounds of the law.

The police commissioner stressed the importance of continued dialogue and lawful engagement as the appropriate channel for resolving such issues. He assured the protesters that their demands would be communicated to relevant authorities for consideration and possible action. At the same time, he urged restraint, warning against any actions that could escalate tensions or disrupt public peace.

“We emphasize the need for sustained dialogue and lawful engagement in addressing such issues,” Lawal said, adding that the command remains committed to protecting the rights of citizens while ensuring security across the state.

The protest concluded without incident, as security personnel maintained a visible presence around the area to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Authorities confirmed there were no reports of violence or disruption, with normal activities continuing across the state.

The Ondo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding public order while respecting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. Residents were encouraged to go about their daily activities without fear, as the command pledged to remain vigilant in safeguarding lives and property.
