FIFA Clears Okonkwo for Super Eagles, Wrexham Star Set for Nigeria Debut

FIFA has officially approved the change of sporting nationality for Arthur Okonkwo, clearing the Wrexham goalkeeper to represent Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper, born in Camden, London to Nigerian parents, had previously represented England at youth level up to the Under-18 category. His switch to Nigeria follows months of administrative processing, culminating in FIFA’s formal ratification on its Change of Association platform.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the development, welcoming Okonkwo as a new addition to the national team pool. The move comes after discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London, where the coach encouraged the goalkeeper to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Reacting to the breakthrough, NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire said the federation was pleased to expand its options in goal. “The Nigeria Football Federation is always excited to have another good player committing to Nigeria and providing an option in a particular position,” he said. “Arthur Okonkwo is a prospect and we believe the technical crew is delighted to have another option in the goalkeeping department.”

Speculation over the player’s commitment had surfaced in recent weeks, but Chelle firmly dismissed the claims, attributing delays to administrative bottlenecks. “Who is saying these things is not saying the truth,” Chelle said on April 5. “We couldn’t call him for the friendly games, because the clearance from the English FA didn’t arrive maybe that is what they mean to say, and if he has decided not to continue with the process then he should tell us first.”

The delay meant Okonkwo missed Nigeria’s March internationals, but his clearance now aligns with the team’s upcoming fixtures. The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Poland national football team on June 3 and Portugal national football team four days later as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

At club level, Okonkwo has grown into a key figure for Wrexham AFC, establishing himself as first-choice goalkeeper in the EFL Championship. His performances have drawn praise from manager Phil Parkinson, who highlighted his development and resilience. “Arthur’s a very influential signing for us when we first brought him in,” Parkinson said. “He’s a player who has adapted well despite a few injuries along the way. He has always responded strongly and is improving all the time.”

Standing at 1.98 metres, Okonkwo is expected to provide strong competition for the starting role alongside established options such as Stanley Nwabali. With his international switch now complete, the goalkeeper could make his debut for Nigeria as early as next month, marking a significant boost to the Super Eagles’ growing pool of diaspora talent.
